The Sconce House exists because wall lights are the most under-considered fitting in a British home. Ceiling lights are chosen with care. Lamps are chosen with care. The sconce, which does more than either to make a room feel finished, is usually an afterthought bought in a hurry.
We sell one thing and we sell it properly: light that comes off a wall.
What we stock
Around three hundred fittings from twelve makers. Alabaster carved in Wiltshire. Bronze sand cast and hand modelled. Glass blown by mouth. Crystal strung by hand to historic patterns. Solid brass swing arms built to be pulled at for thirty years. Plaster and ceramic supplied raw so you can paint them into your own wall. Genuine period fittings, rewired to current standards. And a plug in range for anyone who rents, or who would simply rather not chase a wall.
How we choose it
Three rules. It has to be made from the material it appears to be made from, so solid brass rather than brass plated steel. It has to be repairable, which is why we stock shades, flex, backplates and rewire kits for everything we sell. And it has to look better in five years than it does on the day it arrives, which is why so much of the range is supplied unlacquered.
Made to order
A little over a third of the range is carved, cast, blown or forged only once you have ordered it. That means a lead time, usually three to six weeks, stated honestly on every product page. It also means the piece is yours rather than a unit pulled from a pallet.
Bespoke work
We take commissions. A single surviving sconce that needs a matched partner. A broken glass shade blown to the original. A plaster sconce cast from your drawing. A picture light cut to a length nobody makes. A finish matched to a fitting already in the room. Send us photographs and dimensions and we will tell you honestly whether it can be done and what it will cost.
